Basic Anatomy for Neuromodulator Treatments: Mentalis Muscle

Red background

Overview

The mentalis muscle originates as a bi-lobed muscle from the mandible directly below the labiomental crease. Despite having only two small circular bony attachments, this muscle fuses and forms a large 3-dimentional network of muscles fibers before inserting into the skin of the chin zone. When the mentalis muscle contracts, the mental soft tissue elevate, the lower lip everts, and skin surface irregularities also termed chinullite (cellulite of the chin) can be observed. This video provides a comprehensive overview of the functional anatomy of the mentalis muscle and although no injection simulations are performed, this video is best suited for briefly freshen up on chin anatomy prior to clinical treatments.

Treatment type: Relevant for Neuromodulator Injections

Facial region: Chin

Approach: Anatomic Review

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the mentalis muscle anatomy and its mandibular attachments within a structured anatomy course.
  • Describe its role in chin shape, dimpling, and expressions.
  • Explain how the muscle-skin interaction causes chin irregularities.
  • Analyze its clinical importance for aesthetic neuromodulator treatments.
  • Apply dissection insights to improve treatment planning and injections.
